About Us

Founded in 2009 by ‘’Skolmeistars’’ ltd – a team of experienced teachers, education experts and a project manager, Private Preschool ‘’Maziņš kā jūra’’ aims to implement best practice in education.

Although language of instruction is Latvian, our community is truly international. Children with different cultural and language background live and learn together. Some international students have successfully acquired Latvian and continue their learning at local primary schools, others continue their international experience. Preschool ‘’Maziņš kā jūra’’ has created a warm loving and caring learning environment where all members of the preschool community feel welcome and respected. Parents support their child’s development by actively participating in everyday life, portfolio conferences and our special events.

Preschool is open from 7:00 to 19:00. Currently there are 2 mixed age groups for children aged 1,5-3 and 3-6. As we are situated in apartments, it is easier for children to have a homey feeling.

Our Philosophy

In the preschool's name, we have used a line from Pēters Brūveris' poem “As Small As an Ocean”, which expresses the idea that something seemingly small contains the Universe within itself. The idea of the poem reflects our philosophical concept and attitude towards the child as an equal to adults, an independent personality in whom enormous potential has been placed from birth. Each person is given unique character traits, talents, and abilities to cultivate and follow their calling, to realize themselves and their life mission. We believe that the teacher's main task is to help the child discover themselves, believe in their abilities, and put them into practice. By becoming aware of their uniqueness, the child also learns to recognize that the world is unique and wonderful not only in themselves – so it is in each person, and every living being. Up to the age of seven, a person has the greatest potential for learning and development, and their personality is shaped.

Through inquiring into the world individually and together, our students develop into harmonious personalities with the following characteristics: ACTIVE – curious explorer and inquirer in personal life as well as analytical and active citizen. INDEPENDENT – able to set own goals, choose and make decisions. CREATIVE – able to see new possibilities, take on risks, flexible, spontaneous, self-starter. SELF-CONTAINED – self-confident, has a positive attitude towards self and others. CARING – takes care about self, others and nature, is empathetic, polite, nice and loving, cares about belonging to the Republic of Latvia. COLLABORATIVE – able to compromise, responsible, communicative, friendly, able to take pride in other people’s achievements. OPEN to new possibilities, discussions and differences.

Implementation of the Philosophy

We believe that each student is constructing its own understanding therefore, our students are actively exploring the world through a wide range of activities, supported by our teachers. Individual development of each student, based on its talents, is our goal. Talents are further explored during extra activities in ceramics, healthy lifestyle, modern dance, swimming, judo, English.

Free play is valued and encouraged! Our students love to sing, dance, move and play theatre. Each year all students and teachers collaborate to dramatize a play. Learning is connected with nature’s cycle, preschool traditions and student’s real life and interests. Each month students explore an important idea through integrated units of learning where learning using mathematics, language, arts, science, social studies, music, sports, drama helps students to understand the world, to acquire skills and knowledge necessary to express themselves creatively.
